Canyonlands National Park Camping

Island in the Sky (Willow Flat) Campground

Island in the Sky Campground, also known as Willow Flat Campground, is located in the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park.  Due to it’s proximity to Moab and Arches National Park, the Island in the Sky District is the most visited district in Canyonlands.

Island in the Sky (Willow Flat) Campground Info

  • Open Year Round (Weather Permitting)

  • Elevation: 6000 ft

  • Fee per Night: $15 (Plus entrance to Canyonlands National Park)

  • Total Campsites: 12

  • Water is not available in the campground.  You can get water at the visitor's center

  • Reservations: None.  All sites are first come, first served.  

  • Cell Service: No Service with AT&T or Verizon. 

  • Wifi available nearby at the Island in the Sky Visitors Center

  • 7 Day limit within a 30 day period

  • Max RV Length = 28 feet

  • RV Dump Station is located in Moab

Directions:  Turn on UT 313, approximately 10 miles north of Moab or 22 miles south of I-70. Follow the road 22 miles to the entrance to Canyonlands National Park - Island in the Sky district. Continue on the park road approximately 7 miles. Make a right turn toward Upheaval Dome, and follow signs to the campground.

 The Needles (Squaw Flat) Campground

The Needles Campground, also known as Squaw Flat Campground, is located in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. The Needles District is 90 miles each way from either Moab or Monticello. Fill up with gas in one of those towns.

In this video, we tour the campground and then show 20 minutes of the drive as we head towards Moab. The scenic drive includes parts of Canyonlands National Park as well as the Indian Creek Unit of Bears Ears National Monument.

The Needles - Squaw Flat Campground Info

  • Open Year Round (Weather Permitting)

  • Elevation: 4900 ft

  • Fee per Night: $20 (Plus entrance to Canyonlands National Park)

  • Total Campsites: 27 + 3 Group Sites

  • Potable Water, flush toilets, & trash service are available in the campground

  • Reservations: Loop A is always first-come, first-served. Loop B has 12 sites that may be reserved from March 15-June 30 and September 1-October 31. Group sites are closed in winter and can be reserved from March 15-November 15

  • Cell Service: No Service with AT&T or Verizon.

  • Wifi available nearby at the Needles District Visitors Center

  • 7 Day limit within a 30 day period

  • Max RV Length = 28 feet

  • RV Dump Stations are located in Moab & Monticello. Both are about 90 minutes away.

Bears Ears National Monument

Hamburger Rock Campground

Hamburger Rock is a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) campground located in the Indian Creek Unit of Bears Ears National Monument.  Sites 1 - 9 are at the base of the Hamburger Rock geologic feature.  This campground has easy access to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, which is less than 7 miles to the west.  Hiking and rock climbing are also popular activities in the area.  Be sure to check out the ancient petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock, which you drive past about 18 miles before reaching Hamburger Rock Campground.

Creek Pasture Campground is a BLM campground located in the Indian Creek Unit of Bears Ears National Monument.  This campground has easy access to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, which is less than 8 miles to the west.  Hiking and rock climbing are also popular activities in the area.  Be sure to check out the ancient petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock, which you drive past about 15 miles before reaching Creek Pasture Campground.

Directions

Turn west from US 191 onto Highway 211 and travel approximately 21 miles. The turnoff to the campground is on the north side of the highway.

Superbowl Campground is located in the Indian Creek Unit of Bears Ears National Monument.  This campground has easy access to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, which is less than 9 miles to the west.  Hiking and rock climbing are also popular activities in the area.  Be sure to check out the ancient petroglyphs at Newspaper Rock, which you drive past about 13.5 miles before reaching Superbowl Campground

Directions

From the intersection of Hwy 191 and UT 211, head west on UT 211 for 26 miles towards Canyonlands National Park. Look for a BLM campground sign and turn left onto a dirt road. Continue a short way up the road to the campground.

BLM Campgrounds - Moab

Horsethief Campground

Horsethief Campground is a BLM campground between Moab and the Island in the Sky District of Canyonlands National Park.  Besides easy access to many mountain biking trails, Horsethief Campground makes a great base camp for exploring both Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park.

  • Total Campsites: 57 sites in the main campground and 27 sites in the tent loop across the road

  • Water - No water available in the campground

  • Reservations Not Accepted, except for Group Site #39

  • Cell Service: Little to No Service with AT&T or Verizon.  

  • Open Year Round (Weather Permitting)

Directions:  From the visitor center in Moab, drive 11 miles north on Hwy 191. Turn left onto UT 313, and continue for another 12 miles towards Canyonlands National Park.  Watch for the BLM sign for the campground.  Horsethief Campground is a short drive down a gravel road.
